About

Arthur Dinu

Black and white studio portrait of Arthur Dinu

Studio, Lisbon, Portugal

Biography

Born in Trieste and trained in London, Arthur Dinu has painted from the same north-facing studio for eleven years. His work has been shown in Berlin, Milan, Venice and Lisbon, and is held in several private European collections.

He paints in long, uninterrupted sessions, often returning to a single canvas across a full season. Nothing is exhibited before it has been left alone for a year.

Philosophy

A painting should not ask to be looked at. It should simply be there when you are ready.

Dinu works against declaration. Colour is muted until it becomes atmosphere; gesture is repeated until it stops being a gesture. What is left is a surface that changes with the hour of the day.

Inspiration

Winter light on plaster walls. The Atlantic before sunrise. Byzantine gold grounds seen from an angle. Long silences in music, and the particular grey of a room where someone has just stopped speaking.
